Poor Man’s Steak – Comfort Food Made Easy

This Poor Man’s Steak takes simple ground beef and transforms it into a rich, tender, melt-in-your-mouth dish. Slow-cooked in a savory blend of mushroom soup and onion mix, the patties soak up a deep, umami-packed gravy that makes every bite irresistible. Think of it as an easy, no-fuss Salisbury steak—perfect for a cozy meat-and-potatoes dinner with minimal prep.

Ingredients:

IngredientAmount
Ground beef (80/85% lean)1 1/2 lbs
Condensed cream of mushroom soup1 (10 1/2 oz) can
Dry onion soup mix1 (1 oz) packet
Water1/2 cup
Black pepper1/4 tsp

Instructions:

Step 1: Prep and Season
Lightly grease a 4-6 quart slow cooker. In a medium bowl, gently mix the ground beef with black pepper.
Tip: Handle the meat gently—overmixing can make the patties dense instead of tender and juicy.

Step 2: Form Patties
Divide the beef into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a flat patty about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. This ensures even cooking without falling apart in the slow cooker.

Step 3: Layer the Meat
Place the patties in a single layer at the bottom of the slow cooker. It’s okay if they touch, but avoid overlapping so the gravy can coat each one evenly.

Step 4: Make the Gravy
In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, dry onion soup mix, and water until smooth. As the patties cook, this mixture will combine with the beef juices to create a perfectly rich gravy.

Step 5: Cook
Pour the gravy over the patties, covering each one well. Cover and cook on LOW for 5-6 hours or HIGH for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Step 6: Serve
The patties are done when no pink remains in the center. Stir the gravy, plate the steaks, and serve hot, smothered in the mushroom-onion sauce.
