4-Ingredient Chicken Cordon Bleu Crescent Braid

There are some recipes that look like you spent a lot of time in the kitchen, but secretly take almost no effort at all. This 4-Ingredient Chicken Cordon Bleu Crescent Braid is one of those meals. It combines tender chicken, savory ham, melted Swiss cheese, and flaky crescent dough into a golden, bakery-style braid that’s perfect for lunch, dinner, or even casual entertaining.

The first time I tried this recipe, I was surprised by how impressive it looked coming out of the oven. The crispy, golden crust wrapped around layers of melty cheese and flavorful chicken creates a comforting meal that feels much more complicated than it actually is. Best of all, it requires only four simple ingredients and comes together in minutes.

Serve slices alongside a fresh green salad, roasted vegetables, or a bowl of soup for a complete meal. It's also an excellent option for busy weeknights, family lunches, or potluck gatherings where you need something satisfying without spending hours cooking.

4-Ingredient Chicken Cordon Bleu Crescent Braid

Servings: 4–6

Ingredients

  • 1 (8-ounce) can refrigerated crescent dough sheet (or seamless crescent roll dough)
  • 2 cups cooked chicken breast, shredded or finely chopped
  • 4–6 slices deli ham
  • 4–6 slices Swiss cheese

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper and lightly grease the surface to prevent sticking.

Step 2: Roll Out the Dough

Unroll the crescent dough onto the prepared baking sheet. If using perforated crescent rolls, pinch the seams together to create one solid rectangle. Position the dough with a long side facing you.

Step 3: Create the Braid Strips

Using a sharp knife or kitchen scissors, visually divide the dough into three sections lengthwise. Leave the center section intact and cut diagonal strips about 1 inch wide along both outer sides. These strips will be folded over the filling to create the braided appearance.

Step 4: Add the Filling

Spread the cooked chicken evenly down the center section, leaving about an inch of space at both ends.

Layer the ham slices over the chicken, then top with Swiss cheese slices, slightly overlapping if necessary.

Step 5: Braid the Dough

Fold the top and bottom ends of the dough slightly over the filling.

Starting at the top, alternate folding strips from the right and left sides over the filling, crossing them slightly as you work your way down. Continue until the entire braid is formed.

Tuck in any loose ends to help keep the filling enclosed.

Step 6: Bake

Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the dough is puffed and golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbling through the braid.

Step 7: Rest and Serve

Allow the braid to cool for about 5 minutes before slicing. Cut into thick pieces and serve warm.

Helpful Variations

Add More Flavor

Enhance the chicken with:

  • Garlic powder
  • Italian seasoning
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Onion powder

Lighten It Up

For a lighter version:

  • Use rotisserie chicken breast
  • Choose reduced-fat Swiss cheese
  • Opt for lean turkey ham

Make Individual Portions

Divide the dough and filling into smaller sections to create mini braids. These work especially well for meal prep, packed lunches, or kid-friendly servings.

Feed a Larger Crowd

Double the recipe and bake two braids on separate baking sheets. Rotate the pans halfway through baking to ensure even browning.

Storage and Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

To reheat, place slices in a toaster oven or conventional oven at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes, or until heated through and crispy again. Avoid microwaving if possible, as it can make the pastry soft.
